Who Are These Guys? - The Background of Randy and Mike

Added: March 7, 2007
The Adventures of Randy and Mike is a serialized science fiction series (written in screenplay format) covering the exploits of Randy Dalton and Mike Whitner in the year 2049.
R and M are straight-ahead Oregon rednecks in their early 30's with a surprisingly wide variety of skills with internal combustion engines, power tools and small arms. Tired of the tedium of working in local lumber mills and the Home Depot (in the year 2004), they respond to an ad for "forest work" in a local Southern Oregon want-ad newspaper. They get a recorded message instructing them to rendezvous with the "forest crew" at a certain GPS coordinate in a remote area of the Siskiyou mountains. Upon arrival at the appointed place and time, however, they find no sign of human forest management activity and are instead darted, bagged and processed by the NewEarth Coalition Forces press gang taking a trans-Newtonian drag through near-earth history for oxygen breathing cannon fodder.
Bumped into the year 2049, they are loaded into the Coalition training barge and given rudimentary training in modern weapons and equipment. After 17 days, they are designated "combat ready" and are dropped from close orbit along with their platoon into a red-hot North American combat zone 90 seconds before commencement of hostilities. The pre-combat briefing does not instill much confidence in Coalition tactics or their survival chances, so they uncermoniously run off at the first opportunity.
They proceed cross-country, trying to get their bearings while moving through strange territory. The future Earth that they find themselves in bears only a faint resemblance to the world in which we live today. Massive military misadventures on the Asian Sub-continent, 4 decades without rainfall in the midwest and rabid Canadian neo-nationalism have inverted the world economy and obliterated all remnants of the once dominant American Empire. With communications and infrastructure existing only on the local level, the former United States has reverted to a failed-state-free-for-all in which regional warlords squabble over the dwindling remains of a gargantuan consumer culture.
A few institutions remain however, one of them being Rose's Bunker, a roadside truck stop on the I-5 corridor in Southern Oregon with a very wide range of services available. The proprietor is a powerful and well connected individual with a very broad range of business interests in the area. Impressed by Randy and Mike's capabilities, she assists them in setting up their own security services firm in the Bunker complex.
Despite mostly good intentions, excellent tactical instincts and skills with most every type of weapon or vehicle, Randy and Mike usually end up at the end of the day being pursued through the woods without their shoes by a large group of angry soldiers and/or robots and/or wild animals.
